EPC requirements in 2022 (Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards)

Since 1st April 2018 there is a requirement for any domestic properties rented out in the private rented sector, which are by default required to have an EPC, to have a MEES Energy Performance Certificate rating (EPC grade) of E or above.

It is now against the law for a landlord or agent to rent out a domestic property with an EPC rating of F or G, unless they have a valid exemption in place.

Minimum energy efficiency standards (MEES) were introduced by the government to improve the quality and increase the energy efficiency of the worst performing privately rented houses and buildings.

These regulations came into force for new rentals and renewals of tenancies with effect from 1st April 2018 and for all existing tenancies on 1st April 2020.
